Learning French : French Argot or Slang

Je n'en reviens pas, moi! C'est génial, ici! **

For anyone wanting to learn the French language -- but the everyday language as spoken by Monsieur Toutlemonde -- Mister Everybody, then you must go have a look at this --- I have just come across a fabulous site of French argot, or slang, where you can not only learn a few useful expressions, but also listen to the pronunciation -- in slow, medium or fast speed (i.e. in the way that you and I would say it, the way a teacher would teach it to you, and then the way it is really said by a true red-white-and-blue Frenchman!)

On his site's opening page, André Bougaïeff, Professor at the Département de Français at the Université du Québec in Trois-Rivières, Canada, writes:

Dear readers and learners of French
This is the first site on the internet, if not the only one, where you will improve you fluency in French slang.
French slang (l'argot, in French) is a very casual way of talking French. You should not use it in a formal situation where politeness and good manners are required. But with good friends, in a relaxed context, you can use it to create a more friendly linguistic environment. But beware, not everybody has the same understanding of l'argot. Some people may use it quite casually every day, others will avoid it in general.

Originally, l'argot was a secret language invented in the 17th century by robbers in the city of Paris, in order not to be understood by police spies. Today, it means «special language», parallel to standard French. All French people, at all socio-economic levels in France, know or use some argot, even the president of France, or famous writers at the Académie française!

The main goal of this site is to increase your proficiency in understanding l'argot so you won't be at a loss the first time you hear it around you during a trip to France.

On the site are also the lyrics of French songs, recommended cd's, and a reference to a book and another site, that of David Burke which looks like it is well worth a visit as well.

** I don't believe this! It is brilliant!

(You need RealAudio on your hard drive in order to listen to the recorded dialogs. You can freely download RealAudio from the internet.)
