Do I need a fishing license in France?

So many guests that arrive at Chateau Lalinde notice my fishing rods standing behind the coat rack in the entrance hall, see the big fish swimming in the clear water of the Dordogne river below the chateau balcony, and all too soon ask the question: "Can I go fish in the river?"

And the answer is Yes! You can fish in the Dordogne river right below the chateau terrace, or anywhere else on this - or any other river - as long as you have a license.

And many a time have I tried to persuade the local purveyor of fishing licenses in Lalinde to issue a license to Chateau Lalinde -- so that any of my guests may use it when they are visiting the chateau, but with no success.

I have reported before on the subject, but it is time to do so again, and here is the detailed and comprehensive information on the subject:

Any person wishing to fish in French rivers or public waterways will need to obtain a fishing license. Licenses are usually valid for a year, but it is also possible to obtain a temporary permit, valid for a week during holidays for example.

Procedure

To obtain a License, applicants must first register with an official Fishing and water conservation association (AAPPMA) for a member’s card. This card should be signed and carry a yearly stamp. Fishing associations can be contacted through fishing tackle shops or the national fishing association :

Fédération nationale pour la pêche et la protection du milieu aquatique,
17 rue Bergère,
75009 Paris
(tel. : 01 48 24 96 00)

or the national water conservation office :
Office national de l’eau et des milieux aquatiques (ONEMA),
immeuble Le Péricentre,
16 avenue Louison-Bobet,
94132 Fontenay-Sous-Bois Cedex
(tel. : 01 45 14 36 00).

OR -- right here, outside the front door of Chateau Lalinde, at the little local fishing shop!

Fee

An annual subscription to the fishing association in addition to a fishery tax (the amount is variable according to the type of fishing).

The following persons are exempt from payment of fishery tax, on condition they fish with a single line fitted with two simple hooks at the most (except for rod and reel fishing) :

* war or occupational invalids (with an 85 % disability rate or more) ;
* spouse of a member of the fishing association.

Minors under 16 years are entitled to a reduced tax, whatever the type of fishing.

Processing time.

Fishing licences are issued immediately.

Validity

A calendar year, from January 1st to December 31st.
