What we have been up to in France -- in the heatwave!

A couple of my readers have been writing and asking what has happened to me -- and no, it was not too much partying on bastille Day! But I have had a house full of guests for the last few weeks and enjoying a wonderful time in the exquisite summer French countryside, albeit in one of the worst heat waves the country has experienced in about ten years.

With temperatures -- day and night -- in the upper thirties and early forties and a very high humidity, much of our time was spent lounging around the pool, visiting beautiful towns and villages, sitting in the cool shade of stone court yards where freshly squeezed lemon juice with loads of ice and lashings of sugar can cool us off, relaxing on the chateau terrace with a gin and tonic --- or around a table with freshly picked produce off the land and bought at the Lalinde market, sipping wine under the thick leafy umbrella of the coppiced plain trees, or lazing on the grass with a picnic and a good book in a secret glade in a forest, sometimes venturing out and playing a game of boule or going for a glorious canoe ride down the Dordogne -- --people and animals and all creatures alike searched out the gentle breeze and the cooler spots where they may.

But in the evenings, in every hamlet and village and town there is a dance, live music, stalls with delicious food, traditional Perigordine hospitality and festivities going on, and it is hard to resist being out every night amongst the locals who make the most of this holiday month.
