"Eggs of Light "-- better than (and affordable!) Lilies of the Valley Fabergé eggs**!

Patric Allaert was born in the mining country of the north of France in 1949, and I could not help but wonder whether this was a subliminal reason for his starting to create such exquisite little sources of light-in-the-darkness -- as he does with the ostrich egg and emu egg lamps.

In 1993 he and his charming wife moved down into our region where they bought an old farm and started restoring the house in the spirit of the region. Whilst doing so they also created a studio which they called "l'Atelier du Vieux Chêne" -- Studio of the Old Oak -- with the idea to create. Create what? They did not know at first, but after experimenting with various and divers media, they finally decided to work with light and matter, and their first creations involved calabashes - or gourds -- which they found to have an infinite variety of uses -- the texture, the shapes, the colours provided them with an endless range of possibilities.

Then came the eggs --- starting with goose eggs -- with their delicate and fragile nature, then later ostrich eggs -- hard and durable but taking on a lace-like quality when carved, and later the beautiful green emu eggs -- where the different layers expose themselves in every shade of green -- from eau de nil to dark-almost-black emerald green - to create a breathtakingly beautiful effect when lit from the inside.

Each of these creations can be best enjoyed when a tiny (fridge) light bulb is placed inside. Mounted on a lovely little pedestal in wood, the end result is as exquisite and as desirable as the most precious Faberge egg. Each one different. Each one unique. Each one a must-have! And they are sold at very attractive prices too!

Where to find these wonderful creations?

Patric Allaert has his eggs on exhibit - and sale - in MONPAZIER - Dordogne - 38 rue Notre-Dame - until 15 September 2009 -- daily from 10h00 to 13hoo and from 15hoo to 19h00.
