Festival - 100% Finland

The Finns are invading Paris this spring, thanks to a collaboration between the city of Helsinki and the Finnish Institute in Paris. The 100% Finland festival celebrates Finnish culture and the links between the two countries with more than 250 performances and exhibitions around the country. The first swan babies in three years!

In several articles over the last three years I have been commenting on the swans on the Dordogne River flowing past the Chateau Lalinde. In the last two articles, it was expressing my concern about the absence of offspring and wondering whether the climate change or pollution of the river had anything to do with the swans not breeding for two years running.

It was therefore with great joy that I noticed a swan couple with their little family on the gabarre pond on the Canal de Lalinde last week -- and the first opportunity I had I went along to take photographs of the family -- and what a pleasure! The proud parents were only too pleased to have me take a family portrait, showing off their young with pride and joy!

Unfortunately I still do not know what has stopped the swans from breeding for two years, but one pair with five offspring is most certainly very good news!

Recipe for a perfect summer's evening Tomato Soup

Tomato and Chick pea soup

Ingredients: (Serves 6-8)

4 onions, peeled and chopped
1 big tin of peeled tomatoes
1 medium tin of chick peas, drained
2 cups of broad beans (Fava beans)
1 coffee spoon of cumin
1 tea spoon coriander
fresh basil
table spoon olive oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 block of chicken stock
1 litre of water

Method:

In a pressure cooker
Fry the onions in oil until clear
Add the tomatoes, the chick peas, cumin, coriander, salt and pepper and water and allow to simmer
Add the broad beans and simmer until the beans are cooked.
Pour into soup tureen and sprinkle chopped basil over the top.
Serve with fresh brown bread and butter

A summer's evening in the Dordogne

There is something magical about summer evenings in the Dordogne Perigord. Getting together with good friends, sitting around a table on a terrace overlooking a magnificent landscape of rolling green hills --- crops standing strong and tall and proud, a scattering of stone farm houses here and there, a little bunch of flowers from the garden on the table -- a delicious meal that everyone helped prepare -- with a glass of local wine, sparkling conversation, -- watching the glorious sunset in the west, and then, some time later, watching the moon rise up in the east --
Ah! the stuff that poetry is made of!

A young family on the road.....

I was sitting on the Chateau Lalinde terrace the other day, enjoying the swans that are back on the river, the beautiful dark black oak forest across the river --- and a glass of wine -- when I saw this little family crossing the bridge -- a father, one little toddler sitting on top of what seemed like must be all their worldly possessions on the back of one mule,and a mother leading another mule, also carrying in a sling another sall baby. I grabbed my camera and quickly got this picture of them -- and, whilst looking atg them through the camera lens, wondered so where their own personal pilgrimage had brought them from and where it was taking them to.
I wish you a Buen Camino, my young pilgrim friends......

SSAFA - A Sponsored Walk on 26 September 2008 along the Canal de Lalinde, Dordogne

There are many sponsored walks in and around Chateau Lalinde, and no small wonder, as this must be one of the best spots in Europe in which to walk and hike. The rolling hills of the landscape, the vast forested areas, the beautiful Dordogne River and Vezere River valleys, the history and beauty of the villages and towns, vineyards and landscape provide a limitless variety of routes of every level of difficulty -- from an easy amble to an arduous hike across the hills.

One of the most popular walks remains the walk along the tow path of the Canal de Lalinde. Steeped in history, this walk stretches across about 19km -- and the length of the Canal (see link below for the history of the canal) is lined in magnificent trees. There are colourful fisherman - and -women along the banks of the canal to regale you with stories of past glories, an abundance of birdlife, photo opportunities every step of the way and perfect spots for picnics and a moment or two of quiet meditation.

David Rollston-Smith, a local representative for the SSAFA Forces Help, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, here in our won Dordogne Perigord, sent me an e-mail today to tell me about the sponsored walk they are organising for Friday 26th September. They are seeking walkers and people to staff the event, to help raise money for their energetic work in all areas of France.

The walk will be from St Capraise de Lalinde along the beautiful Canal de la Dordogne to Mauzac, a distance of about 15 km and should last about three hours. Refreshments will be provided en-route and lunch will be available on completion at the Restaurant le Barrage at Mauzac – a four course meal with wine at 12 euros.



As with such events, participants seek the support of sponsors who contribute a donation if he or she finishes the walk, proceeds being given to SSAFA funds for their use in their valuable charity work in France.

Picnics in the Dordogne Perigord

One of the wonderful pleasures of living in this beautiful part of the world, is, on a balmy summer's day, to pack a picnic basket and set off with a couple of good friends along the winding little country roads, find the perfect spot, throw down the blanket and, for an hour or two, enjoy a glass of wine, some delicious cheeses, local sausages, crispy French bread, fresh fruit from the region -- and -- if you have been good all week, a scrumptious pastry from the village bakery for dessert.

The Dordogne abounds with perfect picnic spots -- and few things can be more pleasurable than discovering new and better ones each time the picnic urge grabs me!
Last week, whilst picnicking on the banks of the Vezere River, a gorgeous dog came to join us -- bringing his own toy with him -- a battered dirty old tennis ball, and before long I was persuaded to join in his game of "fetch!" (funny how animals pick out a soft touch first time every time!)

Honouring the newly elected councellors and mayors of the Dordogne Perigord

You may have wondered why these tall pine trees, stripped of their bottom branches and richly adorned with flags are suddenly springing up all over the Dordogne Perigord. -- It is called the Plantation de Mai, the Mai being the decorated pine tree.
It is an old French custom, sometimes done for a newly married couple or as a housewarming of a newly built home, and now all but extinct except for in the Dordogne Perigord, and in particular, so the locals claim, in the Perigord Noire.

After the recent elections in March, this is the way in which the locals honour their newly elected councillors and mayors -- and a good excuse to have a celebration, a big shindig with food and wine and dancing into the early hours of the morning!

A very tall straight pine tree is cut down, the bottom branches stripped to leave only what appears to be a small pine tree at the top, and then decorated with ribbons, garlands and flags and a special plaque to name the person or persons honoured -- "Honneur à notre élu", "A notre maire", "A notre patron".

Last Saturday night the villagers of Tremolat and friends made the best of the beautiful summer's evening and planted a Mai for Mayor Eric Chassagne and his new village council, after which a delicious meal and ample wine was enjoyed and the celebrations continued until late into the night...

Musical interludes in the Dordogne

Undeniably one of the biggest privileges of living in the Perigord Dordogne, or visiting this region during the summer holidays, is the abundance of excellent musical and other cultural events that is on offer.



On any given Friday or Saturday or Sunday evening, in a beautiful old chateau drawing room, or an ancient abbey or stone chapel, musicians from all parts of the world and with every kind of instrument come to perform for us. The quality of the artists is world class and the often multicultural audiences demanding and discerning, but it is the venues that the region provide that make these soirees such a unique experience.





Last Sunday night, the delightful Marie-France opened her elegant Chateau Pecany for a group of about 80 music lovers and the harpist Sophie Clavel, a flautist, a violinist and a young tenor who provide us with an interesting and most enjoyable programme.

Tourists from the USA : Don't get ripped off by travel agents. Let the locals give you the best advice before buying travel tickets.

My first group of Americans this season came to stay at Chateau Lalinde this past week -- and what a pleasure they were! Bad weather, rain, too short days and too fast clocks never once had any one of them complaining -- on the contrary -- it has been a long time since I have seen a group of people enjoy and appreciate the beautiful Dordogne more, or benefit as much from every one of the many diverse and interesting things the region has to offer. If this is the new face of American Tourism, let's make them feel so welcome that they will come in plane loads to visit our little corner of paradise!

Not hard to do? Of course not! BUT -- if we want the Americans to bring their tourism to our region -- despite the weakened dollar and the strengthened Euro, we have to first make sure that the travel agents on the other side are doing their job as they should!

My current group was having so much fun, that two of the group decided to stay one day longer. And it was when I went to the local train station to change their tickets (from Lalinde to Bordeaux and on the TGV from Bordeaux to Paris) that I made a shocking discovery.

These visitors had bought their train tickets in the USA through a travel agent -- Rail Europe tickets --- looking, as we all do, for the best deal, and thinking they had found it. BUT -- the tickets' prices are more than double of what they are quoted as here. The tickets are also first class tickets which, I am sure seasoned travellers -- even well-heeled seasoned travelers will agree are NOT necessary -- especially on the newly refurbished (designed by Christian Lacroix!) TGV and most certainly not on the little "Train d'Esperance" from Bordeaux to Lalinde/Sarlat! The Euro/Dollar exchange rates make travel to Europe for all Americans -- and everyone else in fact, so expensive now, that they should all get every bit of help we can give them. The French trains are so well maintained and attractive that it is a waste of good (shopping!) money to go spend extra on a first class ticket -- second class is just as comfortable and good!

(Photo Credit:ModernFollies) My suggestion is to everyone here in the Dordogne Perigord tourism business -- when you have any contact with Americans who are thinking about visiting France and in particular our beautiful Dordogne Perigord, make sure that you give them all the necessary local knowledge they need to prevent them from being ripped off by crooked travel agents who will look for every opportunity to make a quick buck, and be prepared with the information and details of the best deals available to visitors to France!

Le millésime 2008 du Festival du Périgord Noir sera vif et impertinent, orchestré par une équipe de bénévoles et de salariés passionnés. Il vous invitera à des créations festives et inédites, telles que « chanter » la rose aux Jardins du Manoir d’Eyrignac avec François René Duchâble et Alain Carré ou « respirer » en musique des odeurs gourmandes et chaleureuses avec la série intitulée « Piano, Piano », confiée aux pianistes Dana Ciocarlie, Olivier Peyrebrune et au compositeur Karol Beffa, qui improvisera au piano sur quelques films cultes du cinéma muet.

Le festival 2008 sera, de nouveau, le lieu idéal pour retrouver des artistes de renom (Brigitte Engerer, Henri Demarquette, le Trio Wanderer, Nemanja Radulovic, Magali Léger), se familiariser avec de jeunes professionnels déjà reconnus (Marcela Roggeri, Quatuor Illico, Laure Fabre Kahn) mais également des espoirs des deux Académies du Festival, celle de musique ancienne confiée à Michel Laplénie, et l’académie d’orgue de Sarlat animée par Eric Lebrun.
