The French Day of Music : 21 June

Yesterday and last night France moved!

It was the 25th 'historic' Music Festival of France, when the entire country, and indeed, the entire Francophone world, from the smallest little hamlet to the biggest city, Paris, turn their pavements, their open spaces, their every kind of venue into a stage for musicians of every kind, genre, style, calibre, and taste. More than 20,000 concerts all over France -- and just here in the Dordogne, where there are scarecely 400,000 inhabitants, there were more than 120 concerts organised!

The biggest classical concert was held in Les Invalides in Paris and the biggest pop and rock concert was the uninterrupted "Midnight to Midnight" music fest at La Defense* in Paris where 200,000 people stood in the persistent drizzle and watched the non-stop performances of such names as Placebo, Florent Pagny, Patrick Bruel, the idolised Raphaël, Bob Sinclar, Tina Arena, Corneille, Laurent Voulzy, Nadiya, Pussycat Dolls, Amel Bent, Nolwen Leroy, Pascal Obispo, Pokora, Benebar, Natacha Saint-Pier, Dave et Jean Roch -- and list goes on.

The concerts were all free -- and televised by France 2, and I most certainly sat mesmerised by the sheer spectacle of a stage so magnificent, set against the backdrop of the magnificent Grande Arche with fireworks going off that must have lit up the whole northern Europe!

The French Day of Music was first started 25 years ago - a feather in Jack Lang's cap by all accounts. A brilliant idea, and one which the French and their francophone friends have all embraced and perfected to a thriving vibrant annual event! and dit donc! If you could not make into one of the 20,000+ organised events, grab a microphone and --- make your own music!(watch and listen here!)

And Watch This Space! Next June, 2007, Chateau Lalinde will be hosting its own musical first : An intensive week of masterclasses in songwriting, voice production, musical presentation and performance and improvisation, in the fields of folk and traditional-, classical- and jazz.
