Often popping into the Dordogne Quilter, and appreciating the art of quilting so much more as a result, I recently visited a glorious exhibition of quilts in the Tullie House Museum in Carlisle, Scotland. The work of several quilter artists were on display -- and the exhibition, entitled "Quiltessentials", included many different kinds and styles of quilts.
Quiltessentials workshop opened in 1995 and the founder, Barbara, started to share her passion for quilting and got Cumbria and the south of Scotland quilting! Later Catherine Edgar became their Baltimore tutor and Eileen Blood their machine expert, and today the studio has many excellent masters of their craft.
Some of the quilts that caught my eye were the "Heal with colours of the spectrum" by Joyce Smart-Gill, quilts by Susan Wills, Carol Smith, Lynn Latham. Margaret Bilton's Baltimore quilts had me fascinated, as had the quilt made of 650 pieces, depicting sunflowers, by Susan Hodgson.Helen Gilmore's Kaffe Fassett wall hanging was exquisite, and Suzanna Rome's sampler quilts in reds and greens riveting.
A truly memorable experience!
