"I am living a dream!", were the words Carlos Sastre used to describe his amazing win of the 2008 Tour de France -- one of the most gruelling bicycle races -- and an iconic sporting event in France -- and indeed in the world.
This deeply religious Spaniard is known amongst his competitors as a clean, straight and honorable man who, despite his competitive spirit and single-minded will to win, is likable and fun - and above all, inspiring - a true role model.
When he was asked about the dope scandals -- of which there were three during this Tour de France, his comment was that he is quite sure that in the future there will come a time where no dope will be used in cycling. He says that he knows what the sacrifices are to arrive at this level of the sport -- and he also knows there will always be cheaters in sport -- but it is the sportsman who makes the sacrifices who is the real sportsman, not the cheater. And for this reason he believes that in the future there will be fewer and fewer cheaters, who need to use dope to perform -- and that the true sportsmen will win the day.
When asked which competitor he has ridden with, inspired him the most, he replied without hesitation, "Laurent Jalabert". He says that Laurent is the man who has taught him to stay calmer throughout a competition -- to work hard but to enjoy as well. Laurent has inculcated in him the love for the sport.
