Held every June, (see the Chateau Lalinde Blog entry) this celebration of music in all its guises and genres has gained such popularity that it has inspired scores of other cities to celebrate on the same day-- New York held its first festival in 2007. Whether you wander the streets in search of the perfect concert or opt to consult the annual calendar, the Paris Music Festival (Fête de la Musique) is not to be missed.
Paris Plage (Paris Beach)
Since 2002, the city of Paris has accomplished the unlikely dream of transforming the banks of the Seine river into a beach boardwalk every summer-- and in recent years the Paris Plage (Paris Beach) has been extended to other locations around the city. Summer in the city of light would now be unthinkable sans its beach, even though locals-- in typical Parisian style-- now have a tendency to aloofly dismiss this remarkable event.

Holiday Lights and Festivities
Every December, Paris is decked with festive lights, and rinks are set up outside city hall and other locations for ice-skating. Places like Galeries Lafayette host the most remarkable holiday light and window displays, but plenty of spots around town are dressed up for the holiday season. Christmas in Paris also marks the opening of festive Christmas markets around the city, which can provide a memorable stroll.

Canada, France / En un an, cette Canadienne s'est imposée sur la scène folk-blues parisienne. Son secret ? Un subtil mix trilingue (français, anglais, créole), une guitare stylée et une fantaisie héritée des Caraïbes. « Je parle en présence de toutes les langues. »
La sentence du poète antillais Édouard Glissant trouve un bel écho dans la voix de Mélissa Laveaux : un couplet en anglais, un refrain en créole et un peu de français. « J'aime tordre les mots, l'élasticité des sons, les langues qui chantent comme le brésilien... Dès que cela semble bizarre, c'est qu'il faut y aller. D'où mes accords et métaphores un peu étranges. » C'est ainsi que cette jeune (et brillante) autodidacte, née de parents haïtiens, s'est distinguée, au travers d'un univers poétique singulier, tant à la guitare que dans la thématique. Autrement dit, une histoire intime de blues-folk teintée de soul.

États-Unis / Avec une énergie sidérale et sidérante, la bassiste américaine continue d'explorer les musiques noires par la face soul.
Élevée aux pulsations de la go-go music de Washington et aux sons du Prince des eighties, émancipée aux jazz libres, Meshell Ndegeocello a brassé toutes ces influences. Énergie sidérante et sidérale, cet « oiseau rare » a composé un défi au monde étriqué des catégories désuètes. Certains ont parlé à son propos d'un « rock androgyne », d'autres de réminiscences hip-hop... Meshell porte tout cela en elle, plus des accents folk-blues, une nature avant-gardiste, et des emprunts à la sphère électronique. Mais s'il fallait retenir une seule couleur pour qualifier sa quête musicale déchirée, ce serait celle de la soul, mère de tous les risques de l'intransigeante bassiste.

États-Unis / La grâce féline, en jazz, a un nom : Charles Lloyd. Griffon du saxophone, entouré d'un nouveau quartette de jeunes lions, et chacun de ses concerts comme une élégie.
L'aisance et la vélocité, la mélancolie et l'allégresse, la sérénité et la générosité : la musique de Charles Lloyd compte certainement parmi les plus somptueux et chaleureux trésors du jazz. Il y a déjà cinquante ans, le saxophoniste accédait au statut de « star », avec un quartette au succès monstre dans les festivals psychédéliques, et qui lança Keith Jarrett. Depuis, l'embellie musicale continue, veillant à s'entourer des plus sensibles improvisateurs au sein de chaque génération, en particulier chez les pianistes (Michel Petrucciani, Bobo Stenson, Geri Allen, Brad Meldhau, et aujourd'hui Jason Moran).

États-Unis / Révélé par Giles Peterson, ce jeune new-yorkais rénove la magie du chant jazz-soul, entre Andy Bey, Gil Scott-Heron et Terry Callier.
Avec un premier album événement The dreamer, José James, voix profonde tout en sensualité, fait figure d'héritier (très) attendu des chanteurs cultes des années 60 et 70, lorsque les timbres jazz se mêlaient de soul. Auteur-compositeur et déjà improvisateur grande classe, le jeune crooner grandi à Brooklyn ne s'inscrit pourtant pas dans le revival. À ces influentes références (Nat King Cole encore qu'il revendique), il mêle une remarquable sensibilité hip-hop et une accentuation décalée qui l'installe d'emblée dans l'actualité brûlante, avec la bénédiction du producteur anglais Giles Peterson.

États-Unis / Après Mo' Better Blues et Malcolm X, en symbiose avec Spike Lee, l'enfant de La Nouvelle-Orléans tisse, d'une plume et trompette virtuoses, un puissant panoramique de Katrina.
Si « être un homme noir aux États-Unis, c'est être en colère tous les jours » (J. Baldwin), l'observateur concerné de la double catastrophe néo-orléanaise, la coupable Katrina et l'incurie qui lui a succédé, ne pouvait éprouver qu'un au-delà, tremplin de méditation active. Terence Blanchard, de nouveau sollicité par le cinéaste Spike Lee, a composé, en bande-son au documentaire fleuve When The Levee Broke (2006), ce requiem mémorial. Au son d'une trompette majestueuse, déchirée de blessures encore à vif, dont l'éclat virtuose n'est pas sans évoquer une autre Nouvelle-Orléans, depuis longtemps entrée dans la légende...

États-Unis / Leur funk sauvage avec plumes et tambours a fait de cette célèbre tribu un groupe mythique, le meilleur ambassadeur des vibrations séculaires de l'âme créole et de la transe carnavalesque.
Wild Magnolias. Un nom qui fait tilt dans la tête de tout amateur de rare groove depuis leur totémique premier disque, et leurs terribles hits : Handa Wanda, (Somebody Got) Soul Soul Soul... Un roulement de percussions incandescentes, des cris de Black Indians et les voilà entrés dans la légende du funk bigarré. Trente-cinq ans que ça dure, que les shows bouillants de ce combo embrasent la Nouvelle-Orléans et les scènes internationales. since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He
will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the
worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend
more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children,
are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended
from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for
reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the
job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental
consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could
not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an
abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses;
and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a
burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in
her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by
his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son,
Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

'Someone Else Is To Blame'
'I'm A Victim'
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If
you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do
nothing.
